Gold Vinegar Test

How to test gold with vinegar at home — step by step guide

The vinegar test uses the fact that gold is a noble metal that does not react with acetic acid (vinegar). Place a few drops of white vinegar on your gold item and wait 15 minutes. Real gold will show no change. Fake gold or base metals may show discoloration, darkening, green or black spots, or fizzing. After testing, rinse the item with clean water. This test is safe for real gold but can damage gold plating, revealing the base metal underneath. For best results, apply vinegar to an inconspicuous area first.

Is My Gold Real?

Frequently asked questions

Does vinegar damage real gold?

No. Gold does not react with vinegar. It's safe for solid gold jewelry.

What happens if I put vinegar on fake gold?

Fake gold may show color changes — darkening, green spots, or fizzing — as the base metals react with the acid.

Can I use apple cider vinegar instead of white?

White vinegar is preferred because its color makes reactions easier to see. Apple cider vinegar also works but may stain light-colored items.

Will vinegar damage gold plating?

Yes, vinegar can damage thin gold plating, which is actually useful as a test — if plating dissolves, the item is not solid gold.

How long should I leave vinegar on gold?

15 minutes is sufficient. Real gold won't react even after hours, but 15 minutes is enough to detect reactions in base metals.
