Gold Ceramic Scratch Test
How to test gold with a ceramic tile — streak test guide
The ceramic scratch test uses unglazed ceramic to reveal the true color of a metal. Real gold leaves a gold or yellowish streak when rubbed against unglazed ceramic (the bottom of a ceramic plate or mug). Fake gold, pyrite, or base metals leave a black or dark gray streak. This happens because the ceramic is harder than the metal surface and scrapes off a thin layer, revealing its true color. Important: this test causes minor scratches, so use an inconspicuous area. Also, gold-plated items may leave a gold streak from the plating even though the core is not gold.
